A school in Huntsville, Alabama was in urgent need of roof repairs. Luckily, Old South Construction came to the rescue with a range of Duro-Last products to solve the problems.
A school of 800 fourth through sixth graders in Huntsville, Alabama, was dealing with the distraction of a leaky roof in their classrooms and something needed to be done about it. The first step was to find the culprit and after inspection it was concluded that it was the 20 year old rusted gutters in the standing seam metal roofing system.
As the general contractor for the state of Alabama, Old South Construction has carved a niche for itself over the past eight years by completing more than 175 school and community building projects. Many school projects take place during the summer holidays to avoid additional traffic jams at the drop-off and pick-up points and to make it easier to work in an empty building. Riverton Intermediate School has an active summer program, so there is never a time when the building is not occupied. Old South worked with Madison County School System operations manager Joe Cuzzort to obtain the correct security identifications and security protocols for working between students and staff.
“It was critical to stop these leaks as quickly as possible,” said Richard Peake, senior project manager at Old South Construction.
The building’s distinctive rooflines were highlighted by the old metal standing seam roof, a look the school officials wanted to retain when evaluating options for the new roof. Old South proposed two options. The district’s first desire was to replace the standing seam metal. The second, more cost-effective solution consisted in subsequently converting the standing seam into a corrugated filling. Old South proposed Duro-Last’s retrofit vinyl rib system, designed to impart the look of standing seam panels without the costly tearing down and replacement of traditional metal panels, and won the project.
The 130,000-square-foot building required 1½-inch Duro-Guard EPS Flute Fill insulation, which was mechanically installed directly over the existing standing seam metal roof. It was covered with ½-inch DEXcell™ faceplate bonded with Duro-Grip® CR-20 (HFO) adhesive, and then 50 mil charcoal Duro-Tuff® bonded with Duro-Last Solvent Grip® adhesive was glued. The vinyl ribs were heat welded to the membrane creating the appearance of a standing seam roof system.
“We ended up installing over 77,800 linear feet of vinyl ribs, along with several custom HVAC curbs,” Peake said. “We used EXCEPTIONAL® Metals eaves, gutters, downspouts, eaves and soffits. So it’s a complete system from Duro-Last, literally edge-to-edge, deck-to-sky.”
The project required 4,000 linear feet of EXCEPTIONAL Metals vinyl-coated drip edge, 2,700 linear feet of DX gutters and 1,500 linear feet of 4 x 5 large downspouts.
With a 20-year NDL guarantee from Duro-Last, Riverton Intermediate School no longer has to put buckets in classrooms when it rains.
“I think the biggest benefit of the Duro-Last roofing system is that it provides a one-stop shop,” Peake said. “From gutters, downspouts, fascias, soffits and membranes to what goes straight onto the deck. In addition, there is a single guarantee, which is a great advantage for the builder. As a contractor, we can choose to do business with anyone. But we chose Duro-Last because Duro-Last supports us like no other.”
